I've found that, for me, the following produces slightly more sensible 
results:

	exiftool -TagsFromFile $j -all:all $i

for Nikon NEF -> JPG, at least, in that the resultant JPG is tagged as 
such, and not still as a lossless-compressed NEF file.

might be worth comparing the EXIF outputs to see which you prefer.
