We're (I'm) arguing details. We do agree that a flow graph or
daisy-chain of filters, call it what you will, sounds like a reasonably
good approach.

I don't see why a file writer should be input-only. I would rather have
it output the exact same input as it received and have it save a file as
a side effect. Otherwise it's not possible to have multiple savers, for
instance.
